Simple Extractions
Instruments called elevators are used to loosen the tooth. After that, the tooth is removed "simply" with forceps. It is usually removed in one piece.
- tooth is visible
- can be removed by forceps
Surgical Extractions
Teeth are "locked" into bone, due to the anatomy of the roots. The tooth can not be "elevated" or loosened, because the roots are angled in a manner that it will not come out in one piece.
- incision of gums necessary
- tooth sectioned due to "locked" in by bone
- removal of bone to extract tooth
Wisdom/Impacted Teeth
Surgical removal with more complexity due to limited opening of the patient, impaction of teeth, surgical opening of the site to access the tooth, and possible follow-up care for the procedure.
- removal of bone to access tooth
- complexity of surgical procedure
- tooth often not visible
- additional x-rays may be necessary for planning the case
- additional procedures may be necessary to ensure proper healing
